IRS Form 2048 is a common typo. IRS Form 2848 – Power Of Attorney allows a CPA, Attorney or Enrolled Agent to sign on as a business’ or individuals representative so that they can speak to the IRS on their behalf. The Power of Attorney only gives them the right to discuss and make decisions about tax matters. It does not give them the right to make any decisions or commitments of any kind. It only covers tax matters.
The form itself is pretty self explanatory. The taxpayer’s name and address goes at the top in Box 1. The tax ID either Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number goes off to the right. The tax practitioner’s name and address goes in Box 2. The tax type (i.e. Personal Income Tax or Withholding Tax), form number (i.e. 1040 or 941) and years go in Box 3.
The taxpayer signs at the top of page two and the tax practitioner signs at the bottom.
